Ondo State governor and chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Olusegun Mimiko has described the former ruling party as the ‘grand father of democracy in Nigeria.’
He gave this attribute while speaking at the 67th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting of the party in Abuja.
Mimiko, who doubles as Chairman PDP Governors’ Forum, attributed the party’s defeat during the general election to complacency.
Said Mimiko, “It isn’t possible for any party to be in power for 16 years and not have challenges. Our greatest challenge was our complacency.”
The Ondo State governor, however, raised concerns over what he termed the deliberate plan by the All Progressive Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to rubbish the achievements of its immediate predecessor. He further noted that the greatest achievements of the PDP was the sustenance of representative government in the country. He stated, “For me, the greatest achievements of PDP is the liberalisation of the democratic space in Nigeria. So, PDP can beat its chest and call itself the grand father of democracy in Nigeria. “The APC should handle its mandate with caution and fear of God. The selective application of justice won’t advance the cause of democracy.”
