Boko Haram

Cameroon has sentenced 89 members of Nigerian Islamist militant group, Boko Haram to death. They were convicted on terror charges by a military court for their roles in several attacks in Cameroon's northern region which borders Nigeria.
It will be recalled that Cameroon passed an anti-terror law in 2014 which introduced the death sentence.

This is the first time the death sentenced has been used since that law was passed. The 89 are among 850 people arrested in Cameroon on charges of links to Boko Haram.

Drama In Aso Villa As FG Justifies Buhari’s Foreign Trips

Drama In Aso Villa As FG Justifies Buhari’s Foreign Trips

Drama In Aso Villa As FG Justifies Buhari’s Foreign Trips,
It was nothing short of a melodrama at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, yesterday, between State House correspondents and the Federal Government over the many foreign trips of President Muhammadu Buhari during a press briefing.

Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, who justified the trips, said they were necessary to bring the country back on the track of development and growth.

According to him, Nigeria was a pariah state under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

He said that under Jonathan’s watch, corruption permeated the country, such that foreign investors deserted it. He stated that it was necessary to tell Nigerians that the trips had started paying off since investors’ confidence in the country had been restored. Mohammed spoke during a press briefing at the end of the Federal Executive Council, FEC, meeting in Abuja.

He said: “You do not run a country by being isolated. The personal presence of Mr. President in many of these fora is important because before now, we were almost a pariah state. And the issues that have been driving investments away from this country are terrorism and corruption.

“One thing that nobody can fault this President for is his determination and strength of purpose in resolving these matters. “Mr. President’s presence in many of these fora is highly crucial even in fixing our economy back at home.

” Mohammed’s counterpart in Environment, Amina Mohammed, corroborated the position, saying the President  needed not to run the country by staying at home, especially when he had a deputy and a cabinet of ministers to look after home affairs.

Journalists had waited patiently to be briefed on the outcome of the Federal Executive Meeting, FEC, which routinely meets to take decision on matters of government.

As usual, yesterday’s meeting was chaired by president Buhari with his vice, professor Yemi Osinabjo and most of the 36 ministers in attendance. By a little after midday, the meeting had ended with the Minister of Information, Mr. Lai Mohammed, his counterpart in Environment, Amina Mohammed in company with Minister of State for Environment, Usman Ibrahim come into the press gallery inside the villa to brief Journalists.

The briefing was reduced to a two item issue: Climate change and President’s many foreign trips so far, anchored by the Minister of Environment. Done with the briefing, journalists felt that there were more pressing issues at the moment such as the fall of Naira and 2016 budget, amongst others which an important body as FEC should have dwelt on other than reviewing or deliberating on climate change.

Apparently surprised by the insistence and probing question, Information Minister Mohammed, said he was embarrassed and shocked, noting that Nigerians needed to know the benefits of the presidential trips. Also, speaking on the presidential foreign trips, the environment minister stated that a review of the trips vi-sa-via the benefits was made by the council.

“The Honorable Minister for Foreign Affairs gave a brief of four foreign trips that the President has made towards the end of last year. So, we are starting with the trip that happened between  22 and 23 of November  last year in Tehran   and this was to do with Third Gas Exporting Countries Forum.

“This, of course, as you would expect is very important to us in that we intend to have common interest supported by member countries in terms of making sure that our policies are more coordinated and coherent.
‘’The strategies at the international level can bring in the investments we require for all of us. Also to promote national gas consumption as the cleanest fossil fuel,” she said.

Meanwhile, Vanguard learned that President Buhari is due for more foreign trips on Friday and early next week. He is likely to leave Abuja on Friday for Egypt, return on Saturday and leave for Saudi Arabia and Qatar early next week.

'Pastor' Allegedly Stabs Wife To Death, Flees Scene

P

Wonders they say shall never end. And indeed, we just have to brace ourselves up for the incredible stories we hear/read. Because the truth is, they can't end now. I just wish not everyone that runs a 'church' would be addressed as a Pastor. Pastor kwa? The story shows the man was frustrated and feels like one lord.
The police in Edo State are currently on the hunt for a pastor identified as Henry Ojochunu Ekukpe, who was alleged to have stabbed his 29-year-old wife, Patience Ekukpe, in the presence of their six-month-old baby and escaped, leaving behind a note with 10 questions, apparently meant for his wife to answer.
The Guardian gathered that the couple got married in September 2014 but have been having issues that led to his leaving the house at No. 19 Uloko Street, Okpoghe Quarters, in Eyaen, New Aduwawa.

P2

The runaway murderer is said to be the pastor of the Mountain of Victory and Fire Deliverance Ministry aka Power and Prophetic Church. It was gathered that the victim left her matrimonial home for some months until her husband invited her in the disguise that they want to resolve their crisis.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Osifo, who confirmed the incident described it as "tragic and barbaric" and vowed that the culprit would be arrested and brought to book.

The Guardian obtained a copy of the statement left behind by the fleeing pastor and the 10 questions included: "Have we ever in life went to beg for food ever since we got married? Has your mother ever brought food for us to eat one day because of hunger? Have I not told you at the beginning that I hate someone insulting me? In the first place, did you really come out with your own full mind? Did you come to marry me because of money or for who I am? Who gave you the order to pack your property away from our home? Who is your adviser in this marriage that is polluting your mind against me? You always pray that God should help you to eat the fruit of your labour? So, no man has the power to take one's life but today we are going together. So how do you feel now?"

Father Of Quintuplets Delivered In Ibadan Seeks Help

Quintuplets

A 28-year old woman, Sakirat Rasaq, was delivered of five babies (three boys and two girls) at the University College Hospital, Ibadan on Monday. The quintuplets were born at hospital's special-care baby unit.
Father of the babies, Alfa Yusuf Ewenje, 32, said he was a full-time Islamic cleric, adding that his wife was referred to the UCH from Adeoyo State Hospital, Ibadan.
He said, "We realised that Allah was going to bless us with something special when my wife had a scan after three months of the pregnancy.
"At that point, we knew she was carrying five babies in her womb. After the scan was done, we went to Adeoyo State Hospital from Apete Medical Centre, Apete, Ibadan, where she first registered for antenatal care.
"At Adeoyo hospital, the doctor and nurses said it was better for us to go to the UCH, where there is enough equipment and personnel to deal with such case.
"They said it was our best option. The babies arrived around 8.45am on Monday and they are all in perfect health," he added.
The couple, who already had two children - Umoor (5) and Mistura (3) - lives in the Ijokodo area of Ibadan.

Although Ewenje expressed happiness at the birth of the babies, he said he would need help from well-meaning Nigerians and the Oyo State Government to cater for his large family.
He said, "The situation we found ourselves has exhausted our savings and with five additional children to our family, I need help to feed this family.
"My dream is for them to be leaders in this country, so that no matter my present situation, people will know them for good.
"Though, I am greatly handicapped now because I only make living out of my Quranic teaching class, I want well-meaning people to come to my aid.
"I am using this medium to appeal to the Governor of Oyo State, Abiola Ajimobi, and his wife, Florence, Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, and the Federal Government to come to my aid so that my joy won't turn sour."

FG Ends Kerosene Subsidy, Kerosene To Sell For N83 Per Litre

FG Ends Kerosene Subsidy, Kerosene To Sell For N83 Per Litre

Kerosene Queue

The Federal Government may have eended subsidy on Household Kerosene (HHK) also known as kerosene, as the price rose to N83 per litre over the weekend from N50 per litre.
The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency (PPPRA‎), in its product pricing template released on Sunday, however, stated that the N83 per litre price applies only to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This gives other dealers opportunity to determine their prices. While kerosene sold officially at N50, only few dealers complied to the price.
Again, the PPPRA's template also showed that at N83 per litre, the Federal Government is making a gain of N10.72 for every litre, as it puts the Expected Open Market Price, which is the Landing Cost plus Total Margins at N72.28 per litre. The expected open market price is the prevailing open market rate for the product in Nigeria, after taking certain costs into consideration.
Giving a breakdown of the price, the PPPRA template put the Landing Cost of ‎the product at N57.98 per litre, while the total margin due‎ middlemen was put at N14.30.

Further breakdown of the Total Margins showed that retailers margin was put at N5 per litre; Transporters - N3.05 per litre; Dealers - N1.95 per litre; Bridging fund - N5.85 per litre; Marine Transport Average - N0.15 and Admin‎ Charges - N0.15.

Biafra: IPOB Leader Kanu Apologizes To Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo elders

Biafra: IPOB Leader Kanu Apologizes To Buhari, Jonathan, Igbo elders

The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, has expressed regret for referring to President Muhammadu Buhari as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile in his radio broadcasts.
Kanu, who has been charged along with two others by the Federal Government before a Federal High Court in Abuja on six counts of treason and other ancillary offences, said he intended to write a private letter to Buhari to express his apology to the President.
He also apologised to former President Goodluck Jonathan and Igbo elders for “some uncomplimentary things” he said about them.
The 48-year-old pro-Biafran agitation leader, who is, however, unapologetic about his demand for a Republic of Biafra, has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since his arrest in Lagos on October 14, 2015.
He tendered the apology for his comment against Buhari and others in a statement which he made to the DSS on October 23.
The prosecution, in its summary of the case, alleged that in one of the radio broadcasts by Kanu on August 1, 2015, he expressed his resolve to actualise the Republic of Biafra and “cast aspersions on the person and the office of the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.
The statement read in part, “Reference to the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as a terrorist, evil and a paedophile is regrettable and uncalled for and for that, I unreservedly apologise and will be doing so in a private letter to the President.
“Before PMB (President Muhammadu Buhari) there was the administration of Goodluck Jonathan. I also said uncomplimentary things about him and Igbo elders as well, which I now recognise should not have happened because it is un-African to be rude or insolent to elders.
“All I was trying to do is to draw attention to the problems afflicting society and something done about them.”
Kanu, who described himself as a Nigerian and a British citizen, justified his agitation for a Biafra Republic.
He said IPOB’s secessionist agenda was informed by the “incessant hardship, lack of holistic development in the socio-economic landscape of Nigeria, lack of youth employment, corruption in high offices and economic regression.”
He added that the agitation by IPOB, which, according to him, was founded in London in 2012 by a group of people from the South-South and South-East regions of the country, was in line with the United Nations Charter on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples ratified by African countries, including Nigeria.
In contrast to the counts of managing and assisting in the management of an unlawful society preferred against Kanu and two others, the Radio Biafra founder stated that IPOB, which the prosecution described as unlawful, was registered with the UN to pursue the rights of the people of Biafra.
He stated, “I can confirm that I, Nnamdi Kanu, is the leader of Indigenous People of Biafra worldwide as a legitimately and duly registered body at the United Nations pursuing the rights of a specific indigenous people, in this case, Biafra, to seek self determination according to the said charter.
“The reason for the formation of the Indigenous People of Biafra is to avail those referring to themselves as Biafrans the opportunity made available as a result of the United Nations declaration to seek the peaceful rebirth of Biafra in line with international law.”
Kanu, who is a son of a traditional ruler in Abia State, Sir I.O. Kanu, said he operated Radio Biafra, whose programmes “are designed to wake up the public from its slumber and address the issues of the time” because of his belief in free speech and freedom of expression.
He explained that the intended Biafra Republic comprised Enugu, Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Anambra, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Bayelsa and Delta states as well the Igbanke part of Edo State; Igala part of Kogi State and Idoma/Igede part of Edo State.
Apart from Kanu, one of the two other defendants in the six counts filed by the Federal Government is a Field Maintenance Engineer, David Nwawuisi, charged with the responsibility of maintaining MTN masts in Enugu State.
The other defendant, Benjamin Madubugwu, was said to be living in the Ubilisiuzo, Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State, where he allegedly received custody of a container, housing transmitters, from Kanu.
On December 23 during the accused persons’ appearance in court for their scheduled arraignment, Kanu refused to take his plea due to what he called his lack of confidence in the presiding judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed.
The judge promptly returned the case file to the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice Ibrahim Auta, for reassignment to another judge and the three accused persons were returned to the custody of the Department of State Services.
The fresh charges were filed against the three men barely 24 hours after Justice Adeniyi Ademola, in a ruling on Kanu’s bail application on December 17, ordered his unconditional release from DSS custody having been detained for about two months without any valid charges filed against him.
The PUNCH had reported that the Federal Government had alleged that transmitters for Radio Biafra, spreading secessionist agenda for carving out Biafra region from Nigeria, were found to be installed on MTN masts in Enugu and Anambra states between April and May 2015.

No new date has been fixed for the arraignment of the accused persons.

The Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities has called for an indefinite strike on December 24, 2015 to protest a recent decision of the Federal Government to sack 2,000 university workers across the country by January, 2016.
The National President of SSANU, Mr. Samson Ugwoke, said during a press briefing in Abuja on Friday that the National Salaries, Income and Wages Commission, and the National Universities Commission had written letters of termination to 2,000 members of staff of the universities.

Remove Fuel Subsidy Now, Tinubu Tells FG

Tinubu

Former governor of Lagos state and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu has asked for the immediate removal fuel subsidy. Tinubu made the demand while speaking yesterday in Kaduna at the 10th memorial anniversary of late Dr. Bala Usman, a politician, and former lecturer with Ahmadu Bello University, ABU, Zaria. Tinubu asked that the people be subsidized instead, His words;

"In a perfect world, I wish we could sanitize the subsidy regime and thus continue with it. However, I have reached the conclusion that there are too many demons in the system for that hell to be turned into heaven.
"It is better that we remove it, not for the austere purpose of saving money but to use the money more wisely that we might better save the people. Let us begin a process of a thoughtful, but decisive subsidy phase-out.
"While this is occurring, we should simultaneously phase in social programs benefiting the poorest, most vulnerable among us.
"Programs such as transportation subsidies, school feeding, improved basic medical care and coverage for the poor, and potable water projects are some of the things that can be done with the same funds.
"This way we can undertake this massive expenditure confident that the fruits will go to the hungry, not the already too well fed.
"End the fuel subsidy. Subsidize the people instead - Subsidize the people instead!".

Unnamed

The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of Delta Police Command, Mrs. Celestine Kalu has confirmed the arrest of Owhoghovo Annabel who dumped her six-month-old baby at a refuse dump after a dispute with her husband.

According to Punch, the incident began on Thursday evening, October 8, when Annabel's husband returned from work and asked her to massage his feet.

Annabel refused but instead rained abuses on her husband.
The heated exchange of words degenerated into a fight on Friday morning after some neighbours who got wind of their quarrel moved in to settle the dispute.
Reports claim that the woman was said to have told her husband that she was visiting her mother in Abraka, only for her to dump the baby at a refuse dump midway.
The cry of the baby was said to have attracted the attention of passersby, who took the baby to a police station in the community.

Ms Kalu said Annabel is presently helping the Police with their investigations. She will be charged to court for attempted murder upon the completion of police investigations, she added.

We Abducted Olu Falae to Get Money for Sallah ─ Suspect

Abductors

A suspect, Babawuro Kato, who was allegedly involved in the abduction of elder statesman, Chief Olu Falae, said he and two others carried out the kidnapping to get money for Sallah celebration.
He also stated that the mastermind of the kidnap did not share the N5m ransom he received with his accomplices.
Falae was kidnapped on his farm at Ilado village in the Akure North Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident, which occurred on the day Falae, a former presidential candidate of the All Peoples
Party, clocked 77, caused apprehension in Ondo State.
It was reported that the gang had demanded a sum of N100m ransom from the family.
On Thursday, September 24, four days after the abduction, Falae was brought back to his residence in Akure at about 4.45pm.
However, Kato, who was paraded along with an accomplice, Abdullahi Usman, aka Kadiri, by the Department of State Services on Monday in Abuja, explained that the mastermind ran away with the ransom.
Punch reports that the 23-year-old herdsman said that the unnamed man behind the abduction initially deceived other gang members that Falae family asked him to come for the ransom in Abuja, adding that the suspect fled after receiving the money, shortly before the former presidential candidate was released.
Speaking in broken English, Kato said:

"Three of us were involved in the kidnapping and we kidnapped the man (Falae) because we were looking for money to spend during the Sallah celebration. But the man who collected the ransom ran away with it and did not share it with us."
The suspect, who claimed to be an indigene of Plateau State, said the gang fed their captive with loaves of bread and soft drinks.
The second suspect, Usman, however, denied involvement in the crime, saying he had been telling the DSS officials that he knew nothing about the abduction.
"I am not involved in the abduction, I have been explaining to the DSS that I don't know anything about it, but they wouldn't listen to me," he said in Hausa.
A DSS official, Abdulahi Garba, who paraded the suspects, said they were arrested on October 5, 2015, at J. Zebra Hotel along Ganaja Road, Lokoja, Kogi State.
He said,:
The service wishes to state that the abductors were criminals and investigations have further revealed that their action was not targeted at Falae as a statesman and prominent Yoruba leader." Garba said it was unfortunate that the incident was being given an ethnic colouration, and urged Nigerians to live peacefully with one another and to shun "attempts by mischief-makers to give this incident an ethnic or any other colouration and use same to cause disaffection among the populace."
He added that efforts were being intensified to bring to justice all those involved in the criminal act.
